We went to see a dance event in Chicago where they are a lot of dance event really interesting. I didn’t know that Chicago was famous for dancing.
It was magic. They were many companies and we could see a lot of different styles.
But one of them was really amazing after 5 minutes I felt in the place a positive energy, I had got the goose bumps.
It was beautiful like the things that I used to see in Paris in Chaillot Teater. I was so happy.
I can say though it was a nice evening. Also this is the first time that we saw American People wearing well and fancy.

FRIDAY, JULY 24
Giordano Jazz Dance Company appears on every program, tonight offering Christopher Huggins’s wicked fast Pyrokinesis. River North Chicago Dance Company shows off Frank Chaves’s daredevil Take a Seat.

Jazz dance today covers a lot of ground. Diehards can still expect sky-high kicks and superhuman layouts from the festival Gus Giordano started in 1990—but this year’s edition also includes tap as well as works of unjazzy introspection and hip-hop-inflected social commentary. Here’s a list of some highlights. For full lineups, go to jazzdanceworldcongress.org. The festival opens with the premiere screening of a documentary about Giordano, Gus: An American Icon, Wed 7/22, 6 PM, only open to opening-night ticket holders. The festival’s jazz dance choreography competition finals run Thu-Sat 6:15 PM, only for ticket holders.—Laura Molzahn

Through 7/25: Wed-Sat 8 PM, Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph, 312-334-7777,

Million Dollard Quartet is the name given to recordings made on Tuesday December 4, 1956 in the Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The recordings were of an impromptu jam session between Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash.

We went to see this music hall and it was so great but the actors were speaking with a rude accent and I understood only a little. It was so nice to see this in America because this is THE american culture. There were only old people , it was wierd maybe because it was a little bit expensive. But the ambiance was at the maximum.

A few story found :

The jam session seems to have happened by pure chance. Perkins, who by this time had already met success with “Blue Suede Shoes,” had come into the studios that day, accompanied by his brothers Clayton and Jay and by drummer W.S. Holland, their aim being to cut some new material, including a revamped version of an old blues song, “Matchbox.” Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, who wished to try to fatten this sparse rockabilly instrumentation, had brought in his latest acquisition, singer and piano man extraordinaire, Jerry Lee Lewis, still unknown outside Memphis, to play the piano on the Perkins session.
Sometime in the early afternoon, Elvis Presley, a former Sun artist himself, but now at RCA, dropped in to pay a casual visit accompanied by a girlfriend, Marilyn Evans. He was, at the time, the biggest name in show business, having hit the top of the singles charts five times, and topping the album charts twice in the preceding 12 month period. Less than four months earlier, he had appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, pulling an unheard-of 83% of the television audience, which was estimated at 55 million, the largest in history, up to that time. After chatting with Philips in the control room, Presley listened to the playback of the Perkins’ session, which he pronounced to be good. Then he went into the studio and some time later the jam session began. Phillips left the tapes running in order to “capture the moment” as a souvenir and for posterity. At some point during the session, Sun artist Johnny Cash, who had also enjoyed a few hits on the country charts, popped in (Cash noted in his autobiography Cash that it was he who was the first to arrive at Sun Studio that day). As Jerry Lee pounded away on the piano, Elvis and his girlfriend at some point slipped out. Cash claims in Cash that “no one wanted to follow Jerry Lee, not even Elvis”

The following day, an article, written by Memphis newspaperman Bob Johnson about the session, was published in the Memphis Press-Scimitar under the title, “Million Dollar Quartet.” The article contained the now well known photograph of Elvis Presley seated at the piano surrounded by Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

Selected from Art Chicago and NEXT galleries by guest curator Mary Jane Jacob, independent curator and director of exhibitions at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Partisan works represent a multitude of political ideas and positions from around the world. Partisan will be divided into two sections on the Art Chicago show floor: Partisan and Partisan PROJECTS.

According to Jacob, “It is no wonder in this day and age that artists are reengaging one of the most critical subjects in art: the political and social climate, war and survival. Such human dramas that shape destiny have always existed in the history of art, but they are not usually found, no less highlighted, in the environment of an art fair. So this year’s “Partisan” show is evidence of inescapable concerns on everyone’s minds and which have a place in every sector of the art world.”

Take your time -: Olafur Eliason, May1-September 13, 2009

I was very happy to see for real this artwork which I have always seen in books. It’s really poetic and beautiful. A must see!

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliason creates formally diverse works that are, to use his own words, “devices for the experience of reality”, provoking a heightened level of enjoyement and engagement that is profoundly felt.Materials found in the natural landscape-light, air, water, moss-are put to the service of artworks that are less objects than experiences. Nature merges with articife in scenarios that clearly expose the means by which they operate. In this way Eliasson’s art is in equal parts wondrous in impact and transparent in structure.

…To the degree that we actively engage with the work, we come to a heightened sense of perceiving and doing.”Seeing yourself seeing” is how Eliasson describes this state of self-awareness and reflection, and it is his art’s ultimate goal.It is a condition of creative involvement that the artist hopes may be subsequently carried by each of us out into the larger world so as to better act on our own lives and circumstances. In keeping with this idea, the exhibition title, Take your time, invites you to actively shape your experience of the show and assume greater responsability for your present and future role in personal and civic life.

Armita Raafat (Iranian,B.The United States 1977) Untitled, 2009

Raafat creates installations that employ the distinguishing structures, patterns, and motifs of Islamic and Persian architecture and ornamentation. For this project, Raafat draws on the coloring of and inspiration for the elaborate blue tile work of the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan, Iran-a masterpiece of Safavid Iranian architecture of the 1600S.

Artists in Depth: William Kentridge, May 10, 2008 – May 31, 2009 (South African, b 1955)

The First South African artist to gain international recognition in the post-apartheid era, Kendridge addresses the complex, troubled history and harsh social realities of his homeland.” I believe that in the inderterminacy of drawing, the contingent way that images arrive in the work, lies some kind of model of how we live our lives. The activity of drawing is a way of trying to understand who we are or how we operate in the world. It is in the strangeness of the activity itself that can be detected judgment, ethics, and morality.” “Here’s a person who’s in a coma because of the weight of what he see The question is, Is it going to kill him?”

Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe, March 14 – June 21, 2009

R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was one of the greatest American thinkers of the 20th century — and a visionary for the 21st. Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe is the first major US exhibition of Fuller’s work in 35 years and a testament to his fascinating mix of utopian vision and organic pragmatism. A combination of models, sketches, and other artifacts — many on view for the first time — represent six decades of the artist’s integrated approach to housing, transportation, communication, and cartography.

Alexander Calder in Focus, July 28, 2007 – February 14, 2010

View Calder’s mobiles, stabiles, drawings, and paintings in this small exhibition presented annually at the MCA. It’s a small exhibition but we can see that Calder’s work is very poetic as well, and really delicate. It’s always a pleasure for me.

A great museum which really impressioned me because of his clearness. In my opinion, for people who don’t like and do not have a clue what comtemporary art is about, this museum could change their minds.
