The Photo Shoot 7 Janvier 2010
We got a photographer John Gress, and his material , and a place to shoot. All of us were looking forward this evening.

The week before, we have worked about to know wich models we would like to get. I mean it was important to have a great diversity wich wasr epresentative of Chicago. We rejected the idea to have differents generation. Tony (another intern – technical) said that for him it will be more dynamic to get just young people. First I disagree but he was right. I was afraid to fall down in the cliché, to do something like BENETTON. After this concern about models we talked and tried positioning. This part was so funny when we moved the tables and chairs in the Conference room to try. Fortunatetly I took these pictures . We did this 2 times. We tried to find position which were representating our concept without being too much or doing something too close to advertising for Dance.

The day of the Photo Shoot it was so great. I couldn’t believe that we are doing this campaign for real. I was so impressed about kevin’s energy. It shows that when someone believe in something and do everything for making this happen , it works. I say this because it wasn’t easy to get this and to convince and find everyone. I like this here. Ok, this is maybe too much but I do say I like this hope in America. And how is possible to do when you want, and work well.

I was so astonished to see the photograph’s materials and how he knew how to lead the models. It was a great experience.

First I made the logo. Once this was aprouved by everyone. We talked with Kevin Richard (director of the events) and Peter Moffit (american intern-copy writer) about the concept of the new campaign. We have created two concept, first was “BE stronger” and the second “City of Big Shoulder”.

For more informations I recommend to read the Text in the bellow wich explain everything about the logo and the two campaign.

Peter wrote this to get more value when we showed this to the others people in the company. This day , when we showed for the first time our idea, all of us were so exciting and so stressing out. Because without this agremment nothing will happen. I need to say that I really liked to create this with them. It’s what I prefere doing. Create the idea and build it. This is the best moment. I enjoyed to use Avedon’s picture. The pictures that I used for this was just there to show the idea. Of course, when we argue the new campaign, we also talked about a futur colaboration with a Photographer. They were so happy about what they have seen. I was so glad. For sure, they choose the second one “City of Big Shoulder” as we knew. Because this one is more easy to sell, more comercial but I like this as well. I think it’s interesting to have in the background , the idea of Chicago which is called “City of Big Shoulder”.

Chicago: City of Broad Shoulders- Dining Out for Life Logo

The logo is composed of two parts. The target/ribbon (red) symbolizes the fight against AIDS: this is clarified by the AIDS ribbon that grows out of its side. The dining aspect (blue) of the event is signified by the silverware, used in place of darts, with both utensils pointed at the bull’s eye. The central metaphor is that Dining Out for Life is aimed at the fight against AIDS.

1- Campaign

“Be Stronger” Campaign: Strength/Conviction/Struggle/Engagement

Composition: Figures in the campaign will be primarily solitary, and viewed from the back or side. The back is important because it (a) presents a broader space for the logo, (b) allows for more interesting poses, (c) can be easily adapted for strong positions. With regard to the side angle, the figure could flex his or her arm in a strong manner. Faces may or may not be visible. The essential starting point is that the image must be a representation of strength/a strong person in a physical sense: other interpretations would follow from logo/text.

The logo would be used as tattoo on back or shoulder of the figure. In some cases, it may be necessary to change out the color of the blue text, generally on a case-by-case basis. So far, white has proven to be a reliable option in darker photos.

The logo will be complemented by the tagline “Dine Out, Fight AIDS” as well as an additional slogan characterizing the campaign: “Be Stronger.”

Significance: The significance of the campaign is that the idea of strength is conveyed on a number of levels. At its most basic level, the image conveys the idea of physicality, Chicago’s broad shoulders, etc. The addition of the tattoo adds a conviction to “join the fight,” – the mission of Dining Out for AIDS is essentially internalized by the figure. He or she is literally wearing a badge/symbol on their arm. On another level, the slogan “Be Stronger” adds a certain unexpected connotation. The audience is invited to strengthen themselves both physically in terms of food, and more importantly, to realize their own strength in joining the fight against AIDS.

Impact: The full impact of the campaign comes from its unique approach. It emphasizes strength, both physical and personal. It is thought-provoking, in that the image is not clearly relatable to eating. However, with the addition of the “Be Stronger” slogan and the “Dine Out, Fight Aids” tagline, this connection is made clearer, and the campaign itself becomes more significant.

Audience: We believe that the target audience would be people from 20-50 years old, working people, and people who would be willing invest time and money in the fight against AIDS.

2- Campaign

Big Shoulders” Campaign: Carrying/Caring/Support

Composition: In contrast to the “Be Stronger” campaign, the figures included in the “Big Shoulders” campaign will be in groups of at least two people. Our starting point will be the exchange between two individuals. In cases where space allows, we will expand to larger groups. This is the great strength of the “Support” campaign, as dining is a communal experience, as is the fight against AIDS. The figures’ postures would emphasize the idea of carrying/supporting someone else. However, supported individuals will themselves have their own visible strength.

The logo will not be used as a tattoo, and will instead be used as a stamp, superimposed over the image (without obstructing it).

The logo will be complemented by the tagline “Dine Out, Fight AIDS” as well as an additional slogan characterizing the campaign: “City of Big Shoulders.”

In cases where many figures are being used in a single image, the composition will be dynamic and varied, rather than regular and static. Spacing between individuals will be irregular; figures will be of different height and in different poses, etc. This “tableau” composition underlines the goal of Dining Out for Life as an event that impacts many different people of all races, ethnicities, ages, genders, etc. all over Chicago. The fight against AIDS has universal significance.

Significance: The campaign will be exuberant and playful, stressing that fighting AIDS and supporting others isn’t just a duty: it is truly a joyful experience. The figures are elevating each other, and providing each other with a spiritual boost. The “City of Big Shoulders” slogan is taken from

Carl Sandburg’s poem “Chicago.” The slogan is an incredibly rich expression with many different meanings. On the one hand, it denotes strength. On the other, it denotes support. “Big Shoulders” describes Chicago as a brawny, powerful, dynamic working man. We expand that meaning to introduce the idea of a supportive shoulder, i.e. lending our strength to those who need it.

Impact: The impact of the campaign comes from variation and repetition. We will use the same idea of carrying and supporting, but expressed in a variety of different poses and compositions.

Audience: We believe that the target audience would be people from 20-50 years old, working people, and people who would be willing invest time and money in the fight against AIDS.

When I showed these trials, my boss kevin who is the director of the events redirected me and we decided to re-modeled all and to start by re-defining a new logo. We discussed about the idea of target and cercle … I was happy to see that I ll be directed and because of that I ll learn a lot. Today, when I m deciding to put in my blog all the story about the new branding .I can say that I m happy to improve the concept as much as it is today. I m sure of the value to work within a team in order to create a new advertising. This has been teached me a lot.

At the beginning of my work I have been responsable to take pictures of residents to make a magazine. It was no the easiest assignment and it was not the best conditions but I m pretty happy of the result . First I was so impressive to hear the testimonials of these people. After I was completely affraid about that I needed to do. At three O’clock I took just pictures of Jose Ahlejandro…. and I was so streesful for the others.

But as a miracle a vonlontier came with the lights for helping me. At this moment everyone were interesting. Also, I enjoyed this moment just when each one walked throw the light quickly. I didn’t have time and they moved in the same time. Then, some of them are blurred.

It was incredible in 20 minutes I shoutted at least 10 people wheareas at the beginning they didn’t want have been taken in pictures. Just because they were fascinated by the lighting wich was representing the idea of beeing a model. They were shy and exciting in the same time. I was trying to enjoy this moment to keep in mind this experience and in the same time to shoot well for them. They gave me these pictures. Once this magazine will be finish I hope to be able to send to them these pictures.

A good designer is a great listener.

If you pay attention, the client nearly always gives you the solution.

Design must surprise and inform.

Words are as important as images.

Images can be more powerful than words.

Competition title: Stanford University: Literature Lecture Series
Morla Design was asked to create a poster series for Stanford University’s
Department of Comparative Literature. The challenge involved creating a series
where the first poster introduced the whole lecture series while subsequent
posters allude to future lectures. Poster imagery depicts six stacked books,
with the trimmed signatures facing outward. As each lecture is announced, the
corresponding poster shows the book with the spine facing front which
illustratively depicts not only the content of the lecture, but references the
previous lectures as well.

Morla Design created a series of portrait posters for Levi’s. This poster
conveys a narrative by a fifteen year old girl as illustrated in Jennifer’s
caligraphy on top of the graphic black and white portrait.

This poster is included in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art.

Competition title: The Mexican Museum 20th Anniversary Poster
Morla Design created the Mexican Museum 20th Anniversary Poster to commemorate
the Museum’s collection of Pre-Colombian, Colonial and Contemporary Mexican art.
The benday portrait of Frida Kahlo and the quintessential image of Our Lady of
Guadalupe combined with lotteria imagery, vivid color and 19th century Mexican
wood block type, celebrate the Museum’s anniversary.

I was impressionate about his works and I reconize in his works. Of course I picked in his work many things as many students in graphic design. In my mind but is maybe false he created a real american style, in opposite with Swiss style. He broke all the rules and he worked with a tremendous liberty and much enjoyment. For me it’s a little difficult to explain (above all in english) but now I know a bit more about america and it’s less surprising. I don’t know why but I feel here that enjoying. The liberty is in an the american culture more than in ours. no doute. And then , he is still inspired today all the graphic that I can see on the streets everyday.
Since that I ‘m to Chicago I see everyday on the street some Starbuck coffee and sometimes I stop to buy a coffee. Because that Brand is one the best compagny to have a coffee in America and this is so important to find a good coffee there. But also I interested about this pakadging, I like the style of their graphics. I find that they are one good example of communication which give pleasure and educate the looks.

I found on some web sites about Starbuck coffee and I found this article that I think to be really interested.

Today I was really thinking on a Starbucks coffee. I really admire the whole style of this brand I decided to get material from them to show here.

I did some research and read more about their concept of designing and their team work. Actually Starbucks has two groups of designers as follow: – the global creative team that handles advertising and marketing material, products presentation and packaging; – the store design group witch is responsible for the furniture, fittings and layout of the stores.

At the creative group they have graphic designers together with technical and packaging specialists. Some of the team also bring fine art and illustration skills to the mix so that is probably why they have such a good range of products. Check it out.

Many have no doubt noticed your local Starbucks coffee cups have been sporting the company’s logo from years past. It’s part of an interesting trend in logo and visual identity nostalgia. Sports teams have been doing the same thing for years with their jerseys and in turn selling much more merchandise. Whether or not Starbucks will see an increase in sales due to the retro logo remains to be seen.

However, from an aesthetic standpoint it is interesting to see the two logos side by side. At first glance it’s obvious that two major factors have changed the logo, technology and corporate growth.

Technology as a form of change is evident in the qualities of each illustration. The former logo is clearly a hand drawing and the more familiar logo surely benefited from the crisp production of Adobe Illustrator (or Freehand).

The original features a bare breasted mermaid. It’s hard to believe that today a multi-national corporation would ever give the green light to such a logo (if not only for nostalgia’s sake). The newer mark is also much easier to reproduce in various formats and far more iconic, both features necessary for a large corporate logo.

Perhaps Starbucks is featuring the old logo to remind people that they are authentic, that they have a history, that they were not always ubiquitous and disposable. Once upon a time they had character.

Starbucks‘ Howard Schultz posted “Staying Real in an Instant” on Huffington Post. The story caught my attention for two reasons: it mentioned Starbucks and “simplifiers.”

You see ‘simplifiers’ are – according to John Quelch, HBS professor and marketing expert and author of “Too Much Stuff” from The Economist which formed the basis for The Next Marketing Challenge: Selling to ‘Simplifiers’ – people like me.

He says [about me]: “She finds herself surrounded by too much stuff acquired. She is increasingly skeptical in the face of a financial meltdown that it was all worth the effort. Out will go luxury purchases, conspicuous consumption, and a trophy culture.

Tomorrow’s consumer will buy more ephemeral, less cluttering stuff: fleeting, but expensive, experiences, not heavy goods for the home.”

According to Schultz, who refers to John Quelch: “in a tough economy, consumers are redefining value. They are consuming less, and focusing more on seeking satisfying experiences that enhance their lives. He [Quelch] calls this growing segment “The Simplifiers.” They want fewer material goods, and more quality-of-life experiences. At our core, we have the right stuff to appeal to these consumers, whether it’s the respite from the world our stores provide or now with Starbucks VIA ready brew, quality coffee on-the-go.”

I admire Starbucks. They consistently deliver a perfect venti non-fat latte every time I order one. They have created a haven for me – truly a third place – particularly when I travel, and am in NYC for meetings in need of a place to chill. I love that my Dad enjoys lattes from Starbucks when I come visit and make the one block trek to their DC Starbucks for a fix.

I love, too, that they relentlessly try to redefine the Starbucks experience and improve the value they deliver to remain relevant to Starbucks customers.

In this article, Schultz addresses Starbucks’ introduction of instant coffee. Now, for me, instant is not how I do coffee. My coffee is more about the steamed milk blending with the coffee than just coffee [the intensity of the sensory experience brings to mind a scene from Ally McBeal]. The closest I’ve gotten to ‘instant’ is via a Starbucks drive-thru or an airport Starbucks – both of which still offer me the ‘third place’ vibe.

Nonetheless, I admire the company’s willingness to explore unusual ways to connect with a distinct consumer zeitgeist “without forsaking their core values.”

Some of why I despise instant coffee is that it tastes despicably bad. Perhaps this Starbucks instant product – when mixed with steamed or very hot milk – might recreate the Starbucks in-store latte? I could definitely get into that! A guaranteed latte experience regardless of location? Wow! Take a step back.

Quality and efficiency? A guaranteed practical experience? Yes, that definitely appeals to my sense of simplification. After all, I am a simplifier. I’ve written about the paradox of choice [most recently Refocus Product: Retail As Curator & Less But Better and last year Why Variety Matters For [Retail] Selection]. I am drowing in stuff. Everywhere I turn, there are too many choices to select from. Don’t you yearn for relief from all of the stuff that surrounds you? Do you feel that we are drowning in possessions [see What Happens When Experience Economy Meets Recession Economy?]?

I also value quality over quantity. Who wouldn’t? Quality is more environmentally responsible, too. Perhaps challenging, but also an opportunity as “Too Much Stuff? Enter the ‘Simplifier’ states in Octopus: that this is the “great proving ground for truly authentic brands —those that deliver an honest and fair value, and an engaging, distinctive experience for the buyer.”

Something that Starbucks is attempting with its instant product.

Something I believe we all strive for as we simplify, refocus and deliver outstanding value to customers.

Something that represents a true competitive advantage…
